c. Dissolution of Political Parties and Emergence of Yokusan (Imperial Rule Assistance) System

4-14 Imperial Rule Assistance Political Association

In the Yokusan general election of 30 April 1942 (Showa 17), more than 80% of the total seats were won by candidates endorsed by the Taisei Yokusankai (Imperial Rule Assistance Association) Political Framework Council. Meanwhile, several legislators who were critical of the Association's Political Framework had created the Dokokai the year before, and some succeeded in getting elected even without the recommendation of the Association, including HATOYAMA Ichiro and ANDO Masazumi.

After the election, the TOJO Cabinet attempted to form a single political society that would unite the political world, business world, and the press, among others; to that end, the Imperial Rule Assistance Political Association was launched on 20 May. Before that, all the separate factions in the House of Representatives were forcibly disbanded, with almost every Diet member joining the Political Association.
