Attention! Information for Visitors to the Tokyo Main Library (Update: July 3)

Information on suspension of library services or changes in library hours will be announced on the NDL website and Twitter account.

We are pleased to announce that the Tokyo Main Library resumed offering onsite services starting Thursday, June 11, 2020, although it had been closed to the general public since Thursday, March 5, as part of government measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
We are taking preventative measures as follows:

Limitations on the number of visitors

Visitors to the Tokyo Main Library are required to make an admission reservation through Request form, and the number of visitors per day is limited.
Those who have not made a reservation cannot enter the Tokyo Main Library.

Temperature checks at the time of entry

  • When you enter the library, your body temperature will be checked with a thermographic sensor. Visitors with a fever will not be allowed to enter.
  • Please refrain from visiting the library if you have a fever, cough, sore throat, or feel fatigued, or if in the past two weeks you have visited a country or region where measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are in place.

Wearing a mask

Please wear a mask when you visit the library and adhere to cough etiquette.

The use of hand sanitizers

Alcohol hand sanitizer is available at the entrance of the library, in front of the lockers in the main building, and inside the library.
Please be sure to wash your hands and use sanitizer to prevent the spread of infection.

Shorten your stay

Please limit your time at the library and stay only as long as necessary by confirming in advance whether the materials are held in the library. You can check out the library's holdings on NDL Online (https://ndlonline.ndl.go.jp/).

Our staff

Our staff will wear masks. Anti-infection protective film is installed at each counter. Please be sure that an adequate physical distance will be kept when staff provide directions to users.

Environment in the library

  • The number of reading seats and user terminal seats has been reduced in order to maintain physical distance. Tape has been used to mark the floor in front of some counters to help users know where to stand.
  • Cleaning and ventilation are constantly implemented. User terminals in the library are cleaned with alcohol wipes.

In the event of any confirmed infections

In the event that a visitor is confirmed to have COVID-19, the NDL may provide public health agencies with the contact information of other visitors if necessary. If you are a registered-user, please be sure that your registered contact information (email address and phone number) is up to date.

Other Notices

  • Admission to special materials rooms will be restricted as necessary when crowded.
  • Guided tours and short instruction sessions will remain unavailable for the time being.
  • One-Day User Cards will not be issued for the time being.
  • For the time being, there will be no service for visitors under the age of 18.
  • You can use our online services without visiting the library. We have also resumed offering remote photoduplication services starting Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
