Attention! Information for Visitors to the Tokyo Main Library (Update: March 13)

Information on suspension of library services or changes in library hours will be announced on the NDL website and Twitter account.

The Tokyo Main Library has taken the following measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

Limitations on the number of visitors

The lottery reservation system in effect for Saturdays will be suspended starting Saturday, January 21, 2023. Thereafter, no reservation is required to enter the library.

Admission could be restricted, however, depending on how crowded the library becomes. The maximum number of simultaneous visitors is approximately 1,000. After that, patrons will be allowed to enter the library after someone else leaves.

Please also see below for your information.

Temperature checks at the time of entry

  • When you enter the library, your body temperature will be checked with a thermographic sensor. Visitors with a fever will not be allowed to enter.
  • Please refrain from visiting the library if you have a fever, cough, sore throat, or feel fatigued.

The use of hand sanitizers

Alcohol hand sanitizer is available at the entrance of the library, in front of the lockers in the main building, and inside the library.
Please be sure to wash your hands and use sanitizer to prevent the spread of infection.

Shorten your stay

Please limit your time at the library and stay only as long as necessary by confirming in advance whether the materials are held in the library. You can check out the library's holdings on NDL Online (https://ndlonline.ndl.go.jp/).

Our staff

Anti-infection protective film is installed at each counter. Please be sure that an adequate physical distance will be kept when staff provide directions to users.

Environment in the library

  • The number of reading seats and user terminal seats has been reduced in order to maintain physical distance. Tape has been used to mark the floor in front of some counters to help users know where to stand.
  • Although ventilation systems will be operating constantly in the library, please maintain proper spacing and adhere to cough etiquette.

In the event of any confirmed infections

In the event that a visitor is confirmed to have COVID-19, the NDL may provide public health agencies with the contact information of other visitors if necessary. If you are a registered-user, please be sure that your registered contact information (email address and phone number) is up to date.

Other Notices

  • Admission to special materials rooms will be restricted as necessary when crowded.
  • One-Day User Cards will not be issued for the time being.
  • Please contact us for information on on-site services for persons below 18 years of age.
  • You can use our online services without visiting the library.
