KAJITA Hanko's Wakakusa (Young grass)

Wakakusa is a creative design album by KAJITA Hanko, a nihonga painter known for illustrating fiction in newspapers such as the Yomiuri Shimbun. It was published in 1903 (Meiji 36). Before becoming active as a nihonga artist, Hanko made his living in Yokohama by producing underdrawings for export crafts, including maki-e lacquerware. The work reflects the distinctive perspective of an artist with that background.
