KOBAYASHI Kiyochika's comic prints: Hyakumenso (One hundred faces)

Known for his kosen-ga (light-ray pictures), KOBAYASHI Kiyochika was also an accomplished satirical artist who produced many so-called ponchi-e and excelled at comic expression. The two works introduced here—Shinban sanjuni-so (1882; Meiji 15) and Hyakumenso (1883; Meiji 16)—are caricatures that capture the wide range of facial expressions people display in everyday life.
