Description

Yomei (the teachings of Wang Yangming) scholar. He studied under MARUKAWA Shoin, a Confucian scholar of the Niimi domain in Bitchu (later Okayama Prefecture), and became the president of the Matsuyama domain school Yushukan after going to Kyoto. In 1834, he studied under SATO Issai in Edo. In 1849, he was selected to carry out the domain’s financial reform. He was well-known as a scholar, and KUZAKA Genzui, KAWAI Tsugunosuke and others visited him and studied there. As ITAKURA Katsukiyo, the lord of the domain, was appointed to the post of Roju (a member of the Shogun’s council of elders) in 1862, he became an adviser to the Tokugawa Shogunate. In 1868, he opened Nagase School in Okayama. After the Meiji Restoration, he worked in education and lectured at Shizutani School in Okayama, which was reopened in 1873.
