Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Tsukiji

Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple

Built in 1617 as a branch temple of the Kyoto Nishi Hongan-ji Temple. It was called the Edo Asakusa Mido, however it was lost in the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657. In 1679, the temple was moved to its current location in the landfilled Hatchobori ocean. The temple was involved in fires several times after this as well, being partially or completely burned down, but was rebuilt each time.
