Description

Ukiyo-e print artist. From around 1850, he became a disciple of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. In 1866, he became quite popular by producing the bloody ukiyo-e series Eimei nijuhasshuku with Ochiai Yoshiiku, who also studied under Kuniyoshi. From the final days of the Tokugawa regime until the early Meiji Era, he was committed to drawing pictures of historical subjects. After the Meiji Restoration, he also drew illustrations for newspapers such as Yubin Hochi, E-iri Jiyu Shimbun and Yamato Shimbun. His representative works include Fuzoku sanjuniso and Tsuki hyakushi. Yamanaka Kodo and Mizuno Tosikata studied under him.
