Directions for walking to the NDL from Kokkai-gijidomae bus stop on the Toei Bus "橋(Hashi) 63" Route bound for Otakibashi-Shako are as follow.
Your destination is the visitors' entrance of the Tokyo Main Library of the National Diet Library (NDL).
The distance is about 350 meters and takes approximately 17 minutes on foot.
With your back to the bus, your destination is located approximately at the 8 o'clock position, but you will have to navigate several turns and use a crosswalk with traffic signals along the way.
The sidewalk includes braille blocks almost everywhere along the route.
The directions given below follow the braille blocks and use clock positions.
- With your back to the bus, proceed forward about 3.5 meters in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach braille blocks running left to right.
- At the braille blocks, turn in the 3 o'clock direction and walk about 50 meters until you reach an intersection branching in the 2 and 10 o'clock directions.
- At the intersection, turn in the 2 o'clock direction and walk about 3 meters until you reach a crosswalk with traffic signals. The name of the crossroads is Kokkai Toshokan Mae ('In front of the National Diet Library').
(Note: The traffic signal of the crosswalk is acoustic and sounds like baby chicks chirping when it is safe to cross.) - Proceed forward through the crosswalk for about 23 meters until you reach a sidewalk.
(Caution: Braille blocks are not laid out in the center of the crosswalk. On the way, in 10 to 12 meters, there is the median strip. There is a step that goes up about 3 cm when entering the median, and a step that drops about 3 cm when exiting. There are curbstones on both sides, and the distance between them is about 3 meters.) - When you reach the sidewalk, proceed forward along braille blocks about 4 meters in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach an intersection branching in the 4 and 10 o'clock directions.
- At the intersection, turn in the 4 o'clock direction and walk about 1 meter until you reach a 10 o'clock turn.
- At the turn of the braille blocks, turn in the 10 o'clock direction and walk about 65 meters until you reach an intersection branching in the 12 and 9 o'clock directions.
(Note: On the way, in about 35 meters, there is an intersection heading in the 9 o'clock direction to braille signage. Turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 4 meters until you reach the braille signage.)
(Caution: If you reach the T-shaped braille blocks after passing the intersection heading in the 12 o'clock direction, you have traveled too far. Do not proceed beyond this point as it is an entrance/exit for cars. At the T-shaped braille blocks, turn in the 9 o'clock direction and you will come to a street light pole.) - At the intersection, turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 4 meters until you reach a turn toward 3 o'clock.
- At the turn of the braille blocks, turn in the 3 o'clock direction and walk about 25 meters until you reach another 3 o'clock turn.
(Note: On the way, in about 10 meters, there is an intersection branching in the 9 o'clock direction that leads to the South Entrance of the NDL. The South Entrance is not the visitors' entrance, but you can use it if you need assistance. The directions in that case are as follows.
At the intersection, turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 13 meters until you reach a 3 o'clock turn. Turn in the 3 o'clock direction and walk about 3 meters until you reach a 9 o'clock turn. Turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 6 meters until you reach the automatic doors. Braille blocks are discontinued at this point.
Enter through the automatic doors and proceed forward for 3 meters until you reach the second set of automatic doors. There are staff near the automatic doors at the entrance to help you with your requirements.) - At the turn of the braille blocks, turn in the 3 o'clock direction and walk about 4 meters until you reach T-shaped braille blocks.
- At the T-shaped braille blocks, turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk forward down a gentle downhill slope for about 40 meters until you reach an intersection branching in the 12 and 9 o'clock directions.
(Note: On the way, in about 20 meters, there is an intersection branching in the 3 o'clock direction that leads to Kokkai-gijidomae bus stop.) - At the intersection, turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 5 meters until you reach another intersection branching in the 12 and 3 o'clock directions.
(Note: If you turn in the 12 o'clock direction and walk about 1 meter, there is braille signage.) - At the intersection, turn in the 3 o'clock direction and walk about 5 meters until you reach a 9 o'clock turn.
- At the turn of the braille blocks, turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 2 meters until you reach the T-shaped braille blocks. The gate of the National Diet Library is located here, and it will be closed when the library is not open. Braille blocks are discontinued about 1 meter before and after the gate.
- Proceed forward about 1 meter in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach T-shaped braille blocks. Continue forward about 4 meters in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach stairs going down with a handrail. The handrail is about 1 meter on your right if you have walked along the braille blocks.
- Proceed down the stairs 14 steps until you reach the T-shaped braille blocks. Continue forward along braille blocks about 60 meters in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach the automatic doors.
(Note: With your back to the stairs, proceed forward about 2 meters and there is a ceiling. The ceiling continues until you reach the automatic doors. On the way, in about 50 meters, there is an intersection heading in the 3 o'clock direction.) - Braille blocks are discontinued about 1 meter before and after the automatic doors.
Enter through the automatic doors and you will be inside the building. Proceed forward about 15 meters until you reach the second set of automatic doors. This second set of automatic doors leads to the entrance of the Annex.
(Note: There are two intersections along the way. In about 2 meters, there is an intersection heading in the 9 o'clock direction. Turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 3 meters until you reach braille signage. At the first branching, proceed forward about 8 meters in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach another intersection heading in the 9 o'clock direction. When you turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 3 meters, you will come to the automatic doors which are the entrance of the Main Building. If you already have your registered-user card, you can enter through here.) - At the automatic doors leading to the entrance of the Annex, braille blocks are discontinued about 1 meter before and after the automatic doors. Exit the automatic doors and you will be outside. Proceed forward along the braille blocks about 8 meters in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach a 3 o'clock turn.
- At the turn of the braille blocks, turn in the 3 o'clock direction and walk about 23 meters until you reach a 9 o'clock turn.
(Note: There is no ceiling after about 2 meters in the 3 o'clock direction.) - At the turn of the braille blocks, turn in the 9 o'clock direction and walk about 4 meters until you reach the automatic doors. Enter through them and you will be inside the building. Braille blocks stop at 50 cm before the automatic doors.
- Enter through the automatic doors, proceed forward about 4 meters in the 12 o'clock direction until you reach another set of automatic doors. This is the visitors' entrance to the Annex of the Tokyo Main Library of the NDL.
(Note: There are no braille blocks between those two automatic doors.) - Enter through the automatic doors. There are staff near the automatic doors at the entrance to help you with your requirements.
