Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Tomioka Silk Mill

Japan's first government-run model silk mill located in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture. The building, built in 1872, is characterized by a combination of Western construction methods using a wooden frame and brick walls, and Japanese tile roofs. It is a World Heritage Site, and three buildings, the Silk-reeling Plant, the Western Cocoon Warehouse, and the Eastern Cocoon Warehouse, are National Treasures.
