Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Mt. Tempo

An artificial hill built around 1831 as part of the dredging of the Aji River. A town was formed around it, and tall lanterns were installed and trees planted to make it a recreational area. At the end of the Edo period, a gun battery was constructed there to protect the mouth of the river.
