Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Kawagoe

This city is located in the southwestern part of Saitama Prefecture and was also written as "河肥" or "河越" in ancient times. Kawagoe Castle was built in the Muromachi period and the city developed as a castle town. During the Edo period, transportation to and from Edo (present-day Tokyo) thrived and it was called "Koedo" (Little Edo). The warehouse-style streets remain to this day, and Kitain Temple and Senba Toshogu Shrine are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
