Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Dejima

Dejima was built in Nagasaki as an artificial island by the Edo shogunate in 1634. This fan-shaped island was used for trade with Portugal from 1636 to 1639, and with the Netherlands from 1641 to the opening of the port in the Ansei era.
