Bonotsu

Bonotsu, located in the southwest of the Satsuma Peninsula, prospered as a base for maritime trade with China and Ryukyu, and as a base for Buddhist culture centered around Ichijoin Temple. Ganjin (Jianzhen), a Chinese Buddhist monk, arrived at Bonotsu in the Nara period. According to Bubishi (Wubeizhi), a Chinese book from the Ming Dynasty, Bonotsu is listed as one of the three greatest ports in Japan.
