Description

Painter, poet. In 1901, he moved to Tokyo and entered Waseda Jitsugyo Gakko with difficulty, but dropped out after he won the competition held by Chugaku Sekai in 1903. He was familiar with Arahata Kanson and drew illustrations for Heimin-sha’s bulletin Chokugen and also for the newspaper Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun under Shimamura Hogetsu. In 1909, he published Yumeji Gashu - Harunomaki (A collection of Yumeji's illustrations - Spring volume) and continued to make art collection books of illustrations and poems. He ended up becoming popular due to his unique bijinga (pictures of a beautiful woman) paintings known as “Yumeji-shiki Bijin”. Beginning in 1918, he wrote the lyrics for “Yoimachigusa,” a song that became popular.
