A disciple of Utagawa Toyohiro. His father was a fire fighter and he followed in his father's footsteps in 1809 but became an ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) artist thereafter. At first he worked on a wide variety of genres including bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), musha-e (prints of samurai or military subjects), omocha-e (toy pictures), yakusha-e (actor prints) and illustrations, but never became very popular.
