2023-3-14 120,000 items have been added to the National Diet Library Digital Collections

As of February 28, the National Diet Library has added roughly 120,000 items to the National Diet Library Digital Collections, as detailed below.

Collection Number of additional items Availability
Books 100,000 Only at the NDL
(Partially online)
Periodicals 9,000 Only at the NDL
Audio-Visual Materials 9,000 Only at the NDL

Of the 300,000 books published domestically in Japan and catalogued between 1969 and 1995, 100,000 were digitized and added to the NDL Digital Collections using the supplementary budget for FY2021. In addition, some 9,000 periodicals published by academic societies and 9,000 audio-visual materials, most of which were LaserDiscs and their packaging, were added. With the exception of a small number of these books that have been confirmed to be either in the public domain or otherwise freely accessible on the Internet, most are available for viewing only at the National Diet Library. Starting in January 2024, however, out-of-print or otherwise difficult-to-obtain materials will be made available via the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Libraries and for Individuals.

Please note that these materials will not appear in full-text search results. We do hope to make these materials searchable by generating text data using OCR at some point in the future.
