Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Fukagawa Jumantsubo

This was an area which was reclaimed using dirt from throughout Edo in 1723, when Senda Shobei applied for development of new reclaimed field land. After being called Jumantsubo, it came to be called Senda Shinden (new Senda land). It is said that at the time it was an unpopular and dreary area.
