Why do I need to apply to come to the Tokyo Main Library?

The maximum number of visitors to the Tokyo Main Library is limited to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of visitors and staff. Please refer to: "Reopening of National Diet Library Facilities"

How long will the lottery reservation system continue?

We have reduced the number of available seats in the library to ensure social distancing, so we plan to continue the lottery reservation system for the time being. We will update the information on our website as the situation changes.

Where or when can I apply?
A
A two week schedule of preferred dates of visit is shown on the website of the National Diet Library. Application deadline is no later than 12:00 noon on Wednesday of the week before your preferred date of visit. Reservation confirmation emails will be sent only to successful applicants, by the Friday of the week before their preferred date of visit.

Applications cannot be revised. Each application you submit will be handled as a separate application. Later applications do not cancel previous applications. If you would like to visit the Tokyo Main Library on a day that you have not yet applied for, please apply again for the day you want.

What should I do when visiting the Tokyo Main Library for the first time?
A
If you do not have a user ID, you should register as an “online registered user” via NDL Online and bring your user ID and personal identification with you to enter the library. This registration procedure requires identification documents such as a driver's license and insurance card.

How is the drawing of lots done?
A
After deleting duplicate applications for the same day, a random drawing will be conducted.

When will I be informed of the results?
A
Reservation confirmation emails will be sent only to successful applicants, by the Friday of the week before their preferred date of visit. We will post on the NDL Twitter when we send the confirmation emails.

You cannot cancel the application. If you would like to visit the Tokyo Main Library on a day that you have not yet applied for, please apply again for the day you want.

Partial resumption of admission without a reservation

Is it possible to enter the Tokyo Main Library without a reservation?
A
Given the current situation with COVID-19, the lottery reservation system will remain in effect for the time being. Starting Tuesday, June 1, 2021, however, patrons with a Registered User card may enter the library without a reservation Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. as well as after 4:00 p.m. Please be aware that requests for materials from the closed stacks are accepted only until 6:00 p.m. Reservations are required to enter the library on Saturdays.

Do I have to register as a user?

Insofar as we are not issuing one-day user cards at this time, yes, you must register as a user to enter the library. Please be sure to bring an ID card or other form of identification.

Visiting the Tokyo Main Library

Is there a time limit for entering the Tokyo Main Library?
A
Patrons with a reservation may enter the library anytime during normal opening hours. Patrons with a Registered User card may enter the library without a reservation Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. as well as after 4:00 p.m. There is no time limit for patrons who enter the library at that time.

When should I visit?

Please come to the Library during the opening hours, allowing yourself sufficient time. We will confirm your reservation and measure your temperature at the entrance.

What kind of procedure is required to visit the Tokyo Main Library?
A
Please bring your user ID so that we may confirm your reservation. If you don't have your user ID, you will need to have a card issued. This process will go smoothly if you bring your reservation confirmation email. Also, when entering the library, please disinfect your hands and check your temperature with thermography.

While there are no additional drawings or cancellations available, patrons with a Registered User card may enter the library without a reservation Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. as well as after 4:00 p.m.

Patrons with a reservation may leave and re-enter the Tokyo Main Library at their own convenience. Your reservation will be reconfirmed when you re-enter. Patrons without a reservation may leave and re-enter the library Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. as well as after 4:00 p.m.
