NDL’s accumulated information resources and staff members who have professional knowledge are the foundation to assist the activities of Diet Members. The NDL carries out legislative research in two ways. One is to respond to research requests from Diet members. The other is to publish papers in advance by anticipating national policy issues. The number of answers provided by the NDL in response to research requests from Diet members and Diet staff is approximately 37,900 a year. The details of that are as follows: 660 briefings and lectures at study sessions organized for Diet members, 3,930 research reports made, and 32,600 library materials copied and lent per year. NDL experts write 320 articles a year in NDL’s original publications such as ISSUE BRIEF, Reference, Foreign Legislation, and Research Materials for Diet Members. These publications are all available online from the NDL website. The NDL has developed infrastructure for Diet Members to study and research, providing them with databases such as the Full-text Database System for the Minutes of the Diet and other domestic and foreign databases. The NDL also supports Diet Members by providing them with reading rooms and study rooms in main library building and a detached library in the Diet.
