Current Address
Bunkyo-ku, Nezu
Description
Developed as the front gates of the Nezu Gongen (Nezu-jinya Shrine). The Nezu Gongen was originally an old shrine in Sendagi which was re-enshrined to its current location where the Matsudaira family's Edo residence was located when the 5th Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi took in the head of the Kofu Domain, Matsudaira Tsunatoyo (who would later become the 6th Shogun Tokugawa Ienobu) as his adopted heir, and the shrine pavilions, which managed to escape both fire and the ravages of war, are deemed an important cultural property. Restaurants lined the grounds of the shrine, and it was much loved by the people of Edo as a recreation area called Akebono no Sato (Village of the Dawn).
