NDL participated in IFLA/WLIC 2015

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), which was founded in 1927, is the world’s largest organization in the library and information services field. It handles various issues through over 40 sections set up according to subject, Strategic Programmes focusing on specific topics such as preservation and conservation, copyright and other legal matters, and other activities. Currently the number of members exceeds 1,500, from approximately 150 countries around the world.

The National Diet Library (NDL) joined the IFLA as an associate member in 1966, and became a full member in 1976. The NDL has sent staff members to the IFLA’s annual conference since 1967 to take part in sessions of the National Libraries Section and other related sections, as well as participating in the annual meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) held at the same time as the IFLA conference.

Tokyo hosted its annual conference in 1986, in which the NDL played a part in the Japan Organizing Committee with the Japan Library Association, the National Council of Public Libraries, the Japan School Library Association, and others. The then chief librarian of the NDL served as the Vice-Chairperson of the Organizing Committee and also as the head of the Executive Committee.

At present, eight staff members of NDL serve as Standing Committee members and Corresponding members of sections to contribute to management, information exchange and so on. The NDL has also been designated as the IFLA Core Activity on Preservation and Conservation (IFLA/PAC) Regional Centre for Asia since 1989. In Japan, the NDL has worked to disseminate the results of IFLA activities through its website and publications. Guidelines and reports are translated and released on the website, etc.

The IFLA’s annual conference, the World Library and Information Congress: IFLA General Conference and Assembly (IFLA/WLIC), has been held in different countries to present activities reports, have human interaction, and exchange experiences and views. In 2015, the IFLA/WLIC was held on August 15-21 in Cape Town, South Africa. Six staff members were dispatched from the NDL, to exchange views with colleagues from around the world and deliver reports in pre-conferences and sessions. The NDL Newsletter in this issue carries one of the reports made by its staff members. The next issue will also include a report. We hope you will enjoy reading the articles.
