In addition to books and periodicals, the NDL collects a wide range of materials. Since FY2002, the NDL also collects data from the Internet, including the websites of public institutions and major events.

The NDL digitizes or otherwise converts rare and fragile materials so that users may access them without concern over the materials being damaged or deteriorated.

The NDL has created, maintains, and makes available to the general public the National Bibliography, which includes titles, author names, location information, and other bibliographic information.

Services for the National Diet

The NDL conducts research on national issues, domestic or foreign affairs, and analysis or evaluation of legislative bills at the request of Diet members and others.

The NDL Branch Libraries System maintains branch libraries at government ministries, agencies, and the Supreme Court, which form network through which we provide library services and exchange materials.

The NDL collection features digitized images of old Japanese and Chinese materials published in or before the Edo era (1603-1868) as well as articles on books published before 1968.
