The 16th Mutual Visit Program between
the National Diet Library and the National Library of Korea
The 16th mutual visit program of the National Diet Library (NDL) and the National Library of Korea (NLK) was held in Seoul from May 27 to June 3, 2013. Headed by Mr. Tetsuro Kurahashi, Director of the Book and Serials Division, Reader Services and Collections Department, the delegation consisted of the following other members: Ms. Satoko Muramoto, Assistant Director of the Audio-Visual Materials Division, Reader Services and Collections Department, Mr. Makoto Fujiwara, Assistant Director of the Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL and Ms. Akiko Hashizume, Children's Services Division, International Library of Children’s Literature (ILCL). This year’s program examined several topics, including the acquisition, cataloging and preservation of online materials as well as acquisition, cataloging and user service for non-book materials. Following sessions under these themes, a session featuring children’s library was also held in the National Library for Children and Young Adults (NLCY) in this year.

In the Opening Session, keynote speeches were given by representatives of both libraries.
Mr. Kurahashi introduced Mission and Objectives 2012-2016 and Strategic Goals in his speech. He briefly reported the background of their formulation and gave a brief overview of the current situation and future challenges of projects, focusing on six major objectives.
Ms. Lee reported on four major efforts by the NLK, which include enhancing domestic publication’s acquisition based on the collection development policy, standardization of bibliographic records and enhancement of information services, preparation for the establishment of the National Library of Sejong, which is to be opened in October this year, and management issues at the National Library for Individuals with Disabilities.
In the question-and-answer session, the NLK asked the NDL issues such as the challenges of collection and preservation of cultural heritage based on the agreement between the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

After these sessions, the delegation visited the NLCY and a session featuring children’s library was held. The theme of this year was “Services for visitors.”

After these sessions, the delegation visited Yonsei University Library as well as Seoul Metropolitan Library and other related institutions from May 31 to June 2. The delegation also visited Busan English Library, a branch of Busan Metropolitan Joongang Municipal Library, after stopping by Gyeongju, a World Heritage Site.
