Shonen-kurabu

The Shonen-kurabu (literally: “Boys Club”) is a magazine for children started in 1914 by the Dainihon yuben kai. The editorial policy, “entertaining and enlightening,” won public favor, and the magazine greatly increased its circulation within a decade to make it the acme of popular children’s literature. Its contents were of much higher quality than was expected of conventional children’s literature.

As for adventure stories, many writers such as Hitomi Takagaki (1898-1983), Eiji Yoshikawa (1892-1962), Jiro Osaragi (1897-1973), Minetaro Yamanaka (1885-1966), Shinsaku Hirata (1904-936), and Yoichiro Miami (1893-1980) wrote exciting stories about “great adventures” that enthralled boys.
