New Librarian of the National Diet Library
Masao Tobari, former Secretary General of the House of Councillors,
was appointed the Librarian of the National Diet Library on June 18, 1998,
to succeed Mr. Shin-ichiro Ogata who left the library on the same day.
Born in Tokyo in 1934, Mr. Tobari graduated from the University of
Tokyo with a degree in law. He joined the Secretariat of the House of Councillors
in 1958, and served as Director General of the General Affairs Department,
Director General of the Proceedings Department, and finally as Secretary
General from December 1991 through January 1996.
He is a good calligrapher, and is known as a knowledgeable Sumo (Japanese
wrestling) fan.
