2016-6-2 The NDL has extended the scope its acquisition of data for persons with print disabilities.

The National Diet Library (NDL) has been acquiring accessibility-enhanced data from other organizations in Japan and making this data and other data produced by the NDL available via the Internet to persons with print disabilities (PD). (Refer also to the Japanese-language press release entitled Shikaku shogaisha tou you de-ta soushin sa-bisu” (Data Transmission Services for persons with PD)

Since March 2016, the NDL has been acquiring an extended range of data for persons with PD.

Organization
The NDL now collects data for persons with PD produced by public libraries as well as by any other organizations in accordance with the provisions of Japan’s Copyright Law.
Types of Data
Since 2016, the NDL has been acquiring plain text and Braille data as well as text-only DAISY data, multimedia DAISY data, and audio-only DAISY.
Availability
The NDL makes this data available via its Data Transmission Service for Persons with PD.

  • The Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) is a technical standard of e-book that is specifically designed for use by people with "print disabilities", including blindness, impaired vision, and dyslexia. There are three types of DAISY; audio-only DAISY that contains complete audio substitute for print material, text-only DAISY that contains full text of print material, and multimedia DAISY that contains full text and audio substitute.
