2014-5-1 Launch of collecting extra copy for preserving their bookbinding

In order to hand down our publishing culture to future generations in Japan, the National Diet Library (NDL) started developing a collection of books with notable bookbinding. This collection is targeted for domestic books which are considered to be of significance in our publishing culture or bookbinding concept and to offer suggestions for the future. The books of the collection are preserved as a whole including cases and jackets, bookbinding.

The collection is composed of books presented for the “Book Design & Binding Contest” hosted by the Japan Book Publishers Association and the Japanese Federation of Printing Industries. Some of them were donated by the Book Design & Binding Contest office and others were purchased by the NDL.

In principle, the collection is offered only for exhibitions of a public nature.
