2013-12-13 NDL is engaged in passing down to the next generation records and lessons learnt from the Great East Japan Earthquake disasters.

December 4, 2013 is the 1000th day after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The National Diet Library (NDL) continues to collect, preserve and utilize records of the earthquake through the Great East Japan Earthquake Archive Project.

The East Japan Great Earthquake Sound Archives (NHK) – From new contents of "HINAGIKU"

New searchable databases and records have been added to the NDL Great East Japan Earthquake Archive (HINAGIKU) through the cooperation and collaboration of relevant public and private institutions. For details, please see Searchable database list.

On December 4, 2013, the 1000th day after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the East Japan Great Earthquake Sound Archives of the NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) became searchable in HINAGIKU. It provides sound recordings of testimonies given by sufferers, recorded by the NHK radio center.

About 2,470,000 data are now searchable in HINAGIKU.

Symposium to consider how to utilize the records of the disaster

The NDL and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science of Tohoku University are pleased to announce that a symposium on the Great East Japan Earthquake Archive will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 to consider how to utilize the records of and lessons learned from the disaster for the reconstruction of the affected area. The symposium will feature case reports and discussion with the speakers involved in managing records on earthquake disasters. For details, please see Events.

On Thursday, January 9, 2014, the NDL will also hold a Seminar about the archives of earthquake disaster: From experiences of New Zealand Canterbury Earthquake and Great East Japan Earthquake (Japanese).
