The year 2010 has been designated National Year of Reading by a resolution that was unanimously adopted by both chambers of the Diet on June 6, 2008. Since its establishment in 1948, the National Diet Library, as the only national library in Japan, has acquired all materials published in Japan mainly through the legal deposit system. Now it holds about 36 million items. Celebrating the National Year of Reading, we will hold events that draw attention to reading.
