September 12–15, 2018

The 29th Conference of the European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists (EAJRS) was held in Kaunas, Lithuania. Mr. Takashi Ozawa (Director, Parliamentary Documents and Official Publications Division, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) and Mr. Masashi Kosaka (Assistant Director, Branch Libraries and Cooperation Division, Administrative Department) attended the conference. Mr. Ozawa made a presentation entitled "How to Search for Administrative Information in Japan" (Presentation file: [PDF 1.2 MB]). August 30-September 1, 2018

The 36th International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) World Congress 2018 was held in Athens, Greece. Mr. Ken’ichi Terakura (Director General, International Library of Children’s Literature) and Ms. Rieko Fujisaki (Children’s Services Division, International Library of Children’s Literature) attended the conference.

August 27–29, 2018

The National Assembly Library of Viet Nam held a seminar in Hanoi, Viet Nam, as part of the Project for Capacity Development of the Office of the National Assembly. Participating in the seminar from the NDL were Mr. Yasuhiro Osaki, Senior Specialist in the Public Administration and Judicial Affairs Research Service, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau, and Ms. Maya Kuratani, Researcher in the Public Administration and Judicial Affairs Division, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau.

August 24–30, 2018

The World Library and Information Congress 2018, the 84th International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) General Conference and Assembly, was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The theme of this year’s conference was "Transform Libraries, Transform Societies." A delegation of 12 NDL employees led by Dr. Sawako Hanyu (Director General of the NDL) participated in the conference. Mr. Ken’ichi Terakura (Director General, International Library of Children’s Literature) participated in the annual meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) held on August 27 as the proxy of Dr. Hanyu. Ms. Ulrike Junger, Head Domain Acquisition and Cataloguing of the German National Library, and Ms. Meredith Batten, Assistant Director, Special Collections Description & Collecting Services, National Library of Australia, were invited to the NDL to give lectures in the International Symposium Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Legal Deposit System: The Past, Present, and Future of the Legal Deposit System―the way forward in a digital age held at the Tokyo Main Library. Mr. Luvsantseren Enkh-Amgalan, Vice-chairman of the Mongolian State Great Hural, and his party visited the NDL.

The 2018 IFLA Global Vision Regional Workshop: Asia Oceania was held in Hanoi, Vietnam. Ms. Nobuko Katayama (Director General, Reader Services and Collections Department) and Ms. Yuko Kumakura (Branch Libraries and Cooperation Division, Administrative Department) attended the workshop.

The ISO/TC46 Plenary Meeting was held in Lisbon, Portugal and Ms. Tomoko Okuda (Digital Information Distribution Division, Digital Information Department) attended the meeting.

May 11, 2018

Mr. Luo Shugang (Minister of Culture and Tourism of China), Dr. Shan Juxiang (Director of the Palace Museum in Beijing), and their party visited the NDL.

May 2-5, 2018

The 26th Meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries in Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) and the 17th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL) were held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. Mr. Yasushi Yamaji (Director General, Acquisition and Bibliography Department) and Mr. Tomoaki Hyuga (Branch Libraries and Cooperation Division, Administrative Department) were among the 20 delegates from 13 countries who attended the conference. March 26-29, 2018

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair was held in Bologna, Italy, and Ms. Noriko Sato (Assistant Director of the Resources and Information Division, International Library of Children’s Literature) attended the event.

March 20-25, 2018

The annual meetings of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL), and the meeting of the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) were held in Washington, D.C., USA. Mr. Tadashi Watanabe (Director of Public Services Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL), Ms. Aya Nakazawa (Assistant Director of the Branch Libraries and Cooperation Division, Administrative Department) and Mr. Takahiko Narihara (Modern Japanese Political Documents Division, Reader Services and Collections Department) attended the meetings. In the CEAL meeting, Mr. Narihara made a presentation titled "Collecting and Making Available Materials Related to the Occupation of Japan" (Presentation file: [PDF: 565 KB]). The 11th Plenary Meeting of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) was held in Berlin, Germany, and Mr. Takeo Kotake (Business, Science and Technology Division, Reader Services and Collections Department) attended the meeting.

The International Symposium Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the National Diet Library’s Branch Library System―Innovation and the Role of the Public Sector was held at the Tokyo Main Library. Dr. Yuko Fujigaki (Professor, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo) served as a moderator of the symposium, and Dr. Fred Block (Research Professor, Department of Sociology, University of California, Davis), Dr. Ulrike Felt (Professor of Science and Technology Studies, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Vienna) and Dr. Darius Ornston (Assistant Professor, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto) were invited to give lectures. Dr. Noriyuki Yanagawa (Professor, Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo), also participated in the panel discussion including a Q&A session. Dr. Christiane Raabe, Director of the International Youth Library (Internationale Jugendbibliothek: IJB) in Munich, Germany, was invited to the NDL to give a lecture, "Mission and Role of the International Youth Library and Recent Important Projects," at the International Library of Children’s Literature. Prof. Dr. Albrecht Weber, Professor Emeritus of the University of Osnabruck, was invited to the NDL to give a lecture, "Current Situation and Issues of Foreign Workers in the EU with a Focus on Germany," in the International Policy Seminar at the Tokyo Main Library.
