Q
How do I reuse content from the National Diet Library website for broadcasting or publication?
A
The Terms of Use of the National Diet Library's website does permit some images, documents, articles, data, or other content from National Diet Library websites to be reused freely for publication either in printed or in electronic form (e-books, etc.) or for reproduction in broadcasting, exhibiting, or posting other mediums without contacting the National Diet Library in advance.
When reproducing content for which a party other than the National Diet Library holds the copyright, permission of the copyright holder is required. Please obtain permission from the copyright holders before reproducing the content.
This only applies to content that is subject to the Terms of Use of the National Diet Library's website.
For information on content that is not subject of the Terms of Use of the National Diet Library website, see Terms of Use of the National Diet Library website for details.

Q
How do I know if the copyright has expired?
A
The term of protection stipulated by Japan's Copyright Act is 70 years after the author's death for individual works and 70 years after publication for works published by a group or by anonymous authors.
Currently, the term of protection for works by authors who died before 1967 or for works that were published by a group or by anonymous authors before 1967 is considered to have expired. Please verify the applicable year of death or the year of publication through the Internet or literature research.
The term of protection for photographs published no later than 1957 is considered to have expired regardless of the author's year of death.

Q
One of the conditions for reuse is that content should be clearly specified as being from the National Diet Library website. Where and how should I specify this?
A
We do not have any specific conditions for doing so, but please use an expression like "From the National Diet Library Digital Collections" as well as cite the database from which the content was taken. Or simply state "From the National Diet Library website" where appropriate. The acknowledgement should be near the reused content, or in some cases you may put it at the end of a volume or the end roll.

Q
How long does it take to receive a reply to a reproduction request form?
A
We usually reply by e-mail within two business days (Monday to Friday, except national, yearend, and New Year's holidays). For example, a request received on a Friday will ordinarily receive a response by the following Tuesday, unless that Monday or Tuesday is a holiday, in which case the response will be by Wednesday.
Depending on circumstances, however, it might take several days for us to respond. The reuse of content from National Diet Library publications such as Issue Brief, The Reference, Foreign Legislation (quarterly and monthly versions), Research Materials, might take several days to receive approval. Also, please understand that not all requests can be approved as requested.
Once you receive our reply via e-mail that your request was approved, you may download the item from our website and make use of it.

Q
Do I need to send a new request when I wish to reuse for a different purpose content for which you previously approved my reproduction request?
A
If the Terms of Use of the National Diet Library website permits the content to be reused, then you do not need to send another request. But if you want to reuse content that requires permission to reuse (for example, in another program or document), please send a new reproduction request. On the other hand, a new request is not needed for rebroadcasting or for use in a series of programs and program advertising.
