The National Diet Library invites you to attend the lecture and discussion by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, the Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) and a leading Egyptian intellectual, held under the auspices of the Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd and the Yomiuri Shimbun.
The BA is a major library and cultural complex established in 2002 as the successor to the ancient Library of Alexandria. Being one of a new generation of libraries to be "born digital," it has been actively engaged in such international programs of digitization and digital services as the World Digital Library operated by the US Library of Congress and the UNESCO, Réseau francophone des bibliothèques nationales numériques and the Million Book Project.
In his lecture, Dr. Serageldin will talk about the endeavors of the BA to resurrect the ancient sparkle of internationalism and academism in the Digital Age. It will be a good opportunity to contemplate international cooperation in the digital environment, the future of digital libraries and other relevant issues. After the lecture, Dr. Serageldin will have a talk with Dr. Makoto Nagao, Librarian of the National Diet Library.
