26th CDNLAO Meeting was successfully held at Mingalar Thiri Hotel in Naypyitaw, Myanmar on 2 May 2018. The meeting was organized by the Department of Historical Research and National Library under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture.
Director General(s) and Director(s) from 14 national libraries in Asian and Oceania including Bhutan, Cambodia, Peoples’ Republic of China, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, R. O. Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam attended the meeting. Unfortunately, National Library of India and National Library of Mongolia excused the meeting in last minutes.
At the meeting, Mr. Aung Myint, Director General of the Department of Historical Research and National Library acted as chair. He greeted and welcomed the participants to Myanmar. As the meeting was the first time hosted by Myanmar, he mentioned the gratitude and warmest greet to meet the Director General(s) and Director(s) from the national libraries in Asia and Oceania.
The theme of the 26th CDNLAO is "Preserving Culture by the National Libraries" according to the role of National libraries that are important institution for preserving cultural heritage of the country. He emphasized the importance of digital preservation and the connecting and collaborating among national libraries in Asia and Oceania and so describing why we choose the theme to describe today.
According to the theme of the meeting, interesting presentations on "Preserving Culture by National Libraries" were conducted by Dr. Kaythi Aye (Myanmar), Ms. Jaesun Lee (R. O. Korea), Mr. Sun Boyang (P. R. China), Ms. Tay Ai Cheng (Singapore) and Mr. Walimunige Sunil (Sri Lanka) respectively. They shared the activities and programmes of cultural preservation by the national libraries.
D. Kaythi Aye focused on the digital preservation of documentary heritage for future generation. She mentioned the digitization project of National Library of Myanmar and its challenges. Ms. Jaesun Lee presented about the comparison of past and present preservation functions of National Library of Korea. The National Library of Korea is now applying the mass de-acidification system and rare collection restoration. NLK has IFLA PAC Korea center www.nl.go.kr/iflapac.
Mr. Sun Boyang presented the overview of cultural heritage preservation and conservation of the National Library of China. NLC has been doing the National Strategic Depository of Document Preservation Project, Literature Preservation and Conservation Nationwide project, China Memory Project, etc. NLC has established the IFLA Preservation and Conservation Center since 1984.
Ms. Tan Huism highlighted twin mission of National Library, Singapore as build and preserve the national collection; and build and support national reference. Since 2005, National Library, Singapore has been providing online content as part of the digital content strategy.
According to the request of chair, 27th CDNLAO will be hosted by National Library Board, Singapore in 2019. We need to seek the host country for 28th CDNLAO in 2020.
Except Bhutan, Fiji and Sri Lanka, 26th CDNLAO delegates participated at the 17th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL XVII) event on 3-5 May 2018. Opening Ceremony of CONSAL XVII was held at Myanmar International Convention Center 2 in Naypyitaw. State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi attended the ceremony and delivered Opening Remarks. Then, CDNLAO delegates took photo with State Counsellor.
On 5 May 2018, CDNLAO delegates were visiting Parliament, National Library, National Museum and National Archives. They got new experience of presentation on holding parliament, superior exhibits and showrooms at the National Museum (Naypyitaw) and National Archives (Naypyitaw), and large collection of traditional manuscripts at the National Library (Naypyitaw).
