Mr. Gene Tan has been appointed Director National Library Singapore on 1 Nov, 2012. On the same day on 1 Nov, the National Archives of Singapore came under the National Library Board of Singapore (NLB). Ms. Ngian Lek Choh is responsible for the National Library, the National Archives of Singapore and Collections, which handles all collection management processes and matters for the NLB’s libraries.

In addition, library@chinatown officially opened on 31 Jan 2013, by the Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information.

With a total floor area of 1,000 square meters, it is the National Library Board’s first themed library on Chinese arts and culture. library@chinatown, adopts a self-service model as it is run by volunteers and carries a collection that caters to those who have an interest in Chinese arts and culture as well as students, teachers and parents. Visitors can discover and learn more about Chinese traditions, literature, values and beliefs, and artistic expressions through the library’s Chinese arts and culture collection. The library houses a collection of 30,000 titles in English, Chinese and a small selection of books in Malay and Tamil. Local and foreign online newspapers on large screens via iPads offer news updates. Visitors can enjoy a good read in the library’s conducive reading spaces and participate in its wide array of themed programmes including arts appreciation talks and workshops, and musical performances.
