Inauguration of First Librarian: Librarian is Demanded to be more Professional

Mr. Paul Permadi, Mr. Harmini Harun N. Sunartio and Mr. Iskandar Sulaiman were inaugurated as first librarian, located at Auditorium Hall, the National Library of Indonesia, Jl. Salemba Raya 28A Jakarta. This inauguration was a credit of their competency as librarians. But beside that, there is a demand to develop professionalism as stated by Supriyanto, Deputy of Library Resources Development which representing Director of National Library of Indonesia.

“Librarian profession is demanded to become more professional in doing librarianship activities. Librarian with any level could push this functional position to direct library service users or candidate users,” he added.

Before inaugurated, those three librarians presented their scientific papers in front of a number of structural and functional officers within the National Library of Indonesia, some librarians and representatives from Indonesian Librarian Association (IPI).

Mr. Harmaini, First Librarian from Department of Energy and Mineral Resources on his scientific speech which title is "Center of Research and Development Library, between wishes and Facts" said that the problems faced by research library were that information requests and library visitors still low in number.

Mr. Iskandar Sulaiman, First librarian of Jakarta Islamic State University, highlighted "Islamic School Library Role in Education." According to him, library is a barometer for nation development, which means the development level of a nation could be seen from its library. For that we need to try developing the Islamic Library, where the Islamic School library in it.

Meanwhile, Paul Permadi, First librarian of the National Library and Former Deputy of Library Material and information Services Development said the theme was aimed to revitalize the importance of self introspection, whether the National Library’s development direction is on the right track, in his paper titled "Quo Vadis National Library of Indonesia." On his oration, Paul Permadi explained the steps of National Library’s development which lead by three leaders, i.e Mastini Hardjoprakoso, Hernandono and Dady P. Rachmananta.
