No. 71, July 2011

On 2 May this year I took up my position as the first director and National Librarian of the National Library of New Zealand following the National Library's integration into the new Department of Internal Affairs.
Together with our Archives, Government Technology Services and other units, the National Library now forms part of the KIRT (Knowledge, Information, Research & Technology) branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. The new structure will give the National Library increased opportunities to develop and offer innovative digital information services to the people of New Zealand, while protecting our documentary heritage. The National Library will continue to seek opportunities for collaboration with other national libraries, for mutual benefit.
I send warm greetings to my fellow National Library directors in the Asia-Oceania region. Although I could not attend the recent CDNL-AO meeting in Seoul, I look forward to meeting Asia-Oceania colleagues at the CDNL meeting in August this year.
With best wishes,
Bill Macnaught
