CDNLAO Newsletter
No. 70, March 2011
To member libraries of the CDNLAO:
Since the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami hit the Tohoku district (north-eastern Japan) and devastated the Pacific coast of the area on March 11th, we have received many of kind messages of support from the world over and are most grateful.
The major libraries in the region were temporarily closed, though some of them are now open again. We are still gathering information on the situation of city/town libraries in the hardest-hit districts. Libraries around the nation, library associations, private sector and the Government are working to indentify the local need and deliver support. Actions such as providing books for evacuated children have already started. Certainly, restoration of damaged materials and local memories will be one of the vital tasks.
Tokyo and further western parts of Japan, where the National Diet Library facilities are located, did not sustain significant damage from the jolts and we kept on working.
Thank you again for your warm support.
