CDNLAO Newsletter

The National Diet Library (NDL) Japan organized the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Directors of National Libraries in Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) on October 20, 2008 at the Tokyo Main Library of the NDL, Japan. 28 representatives from 23 countries, a record high, participated in the CDNLAO meeting held under the theme of "Cooperation in Knowledge-based Society." At the opening, the Chair, Dr. Makoto Nagao, Librarian of the NDL, thanked everyone who was participating in the meeting. The agenda of the 16th meeting and the proceedings of the 15th CDNLAO meeting were approved. In the morning, representatives of participating countries reported their libraries´ activities and progress followed by a short discussion.
Special presentations
In the afternoon, two presentations were delivered by the National Library of China (NLC) and by the National Library Board, Singapore (NLB).
First, the NLC reported on the damage to libraries hit by the Sichuan Earthquake in May 2008 and indicated their recovery plans and collaborative efforts for reconstruction. They also said that the experience made them fully aware of the importance of making backups of the library collection.
Next, Dr. N. Varaprasad, Chief Executive of the NLB suggested in his talk that CDNLAO members who were developing a digital preservation system should consider offering preservation services, and other members should consider policies for disaster recovery through digital preservation using such services. He also suggested starting with a small group. In response, the National Library of New Zealand (NLNZ) and the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) expressed their intention of participating in the project.
Report on the CDNL 2008 Quebec
Report on the CDNL (Conference of Directors of National Libraries) 2008 was given by Ms. Penny Carnaby, Chief Executive / National Librarian, NLNZ (Chair CDNL) to share the outcome from at the CDNL 2008 meeting with CDNLAO participants some of whom did not attend the CDNL 2008 in Quebec. She introduced a prototype project "National Libraries Global," which was reported by the NLB at the CDNL meeting. The National Library of Australia (NLA), the NLB, Library and Archives Canada and the NLNZ started the project aiming at providing global access to the digital collections of national libraries through a single interface. In addition, she outlined the two visions drafted in the CDNL 2008.
Discussions
In the discussions, participants discussed how CDNLAO members can collaborate in practical ways and talked about the possibilities of collaboration in the fields of the above-mentioned National Libraries Global project, digital preservation, web archiving, and open source software. The NLNZ, the NLB and the NDL decided to take leadership of the National Libraries Global project, digital preservation and web archiving respectively and start talking with the countries which have the same interest.
Proposal by the NDL
The NDL also made a proposal to relaunch the CDNLAO website before the next CDNLAO meeting to be held in April 2009 and take responsibility for its operation and maintenance. The proposal was approved.
Future host libraries
In conclusion, future host libraries were confirmed as follows:

The 17th CDNLAO meeting will be held at the National Library of Vietnam on the afternoon of April 20, 2009 in parallel with the CONSAL XIV.
