Nepal National Library observed 50th year of its establishment amidst a function organized on 3rd January 2006.
Honorable Assistant Minister Bhuwan Pathak, Education and Sports inaugurated the function by lighting the candle. The Minister also formally inaugurated the official website of Nepal National Library (www.nnl.gov.np) and Kaisher Library (www.klib.gov.np) at the same time. At the same occasion, Minister felicitated those three ex-Chairmen of Nepal National Library attending the ceremony. Mr. Pathak also handed over letter of honour to the staff of NNL who had started their service at this library and retired from the same and also to those staff who have served the library continuously for more than 15 years and lastly gave away certificates to the winners of essay competition.
Speaking on the occasion speakers highlighted the importance of library and information centres in this age of information and communication. The speakers also highlighted on the role played by Nepal National Library in the educational development of the country since its establishment. They focused on the duty of libraries in preserving and conserving the reading materials as literary heritage for the future generation. Speakers shed light on the importance of public library in the educational upliftment of a country and said that there should be at least one public library at each community. They also felt the need of policy related to book and library in the country. Speakers on the occasion were Honourable Dy Minister Mr. Bhuwan Pathak, Education and Sports, Mr. Chuman Singh Basnet, Secretary of Ministry of Education and Sports, Dr. Basudev Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor of Royal Nepal Academy, Mr. Ram Sarobar Dube, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Education and Sports.

Presenting progress report on the occasion, Mr. Dasharath Thapa, Chief of Nepal National Library highlighted the existing situation of libraries and in particular Nepal National Library. He also expressed the problems facing by the library such as the level of the national library, low priority to libraries, lack of library legislation, poor implementation of the provision in Press and Publication Act etc. Mr. Thapa also expressed the need of extending the library hour.
Nepal National Library organized a half day workshop on “National Policy on Library Development in Nepal” on 3rd January 2006. The workshop was organized keeping in view the lack of library policy in Nepal even in this age of information and communication. In the morning of 3rd January Mr. Dasharath Thapa, Chief of NNL presented a concept paper on library policy based on the policies of foreign countries.
The participants shared idea on the subject and discussed upon
it. The total numbers of participants were divided into three groups
for group discussion. Each group prepared their findings and such
findings were presented to others. The conclusion of the workshop was
presented on the ceremonial session by Mr. Murari Binod Pokharel.

On the occasion of its 50th Anniversary, NNL organized on the spot inter school essay competition on December 9, 2005. There were 18 participants from 9 different government schools two from each school of grade 9 containing one girl and one boy. The essay competition was aimed at creating awareness about library among the school children of government schools. The topic was “Importance of library in the student life”.
Actually Nepal National Library was established on 2nd January 1957 however according to Nepali calendar it fell on 3rd January this year.
