The year 2003 saw considerable progress
made by the National
Library of Vietnam. All norms have been on increase from 5% to 56%
compared with the year 2002. Major tasks have been accomplished, namely
collection has been developed, thousands of records have been supplemented
to the database, increasing the total records of the National Library database
to 215,533; the Project on Library Automation has been successfully implemented;
many Projects in collaboration with foreign partners have been carried
out; models of Electronic Library and Digital Library have been in shape,
making physical changes in National Library's activities. Scientific study
activities have been promoted, process of material treatment has been refined.
Quality of services and international exchange has been enhanced. With
new changes, the National Library has put strong influence on the entire
system of public libraries in terms of service development. Services vary
from traditional to modern forms to meet the demands of readers. This explains
as to why the number of readers has rapidly increased, breaking the record
in the national library network (increased by 35.4% against the year 2002;
the number of readers cards issued increased by 56.1%), making a considerable
contribution to the modernization and industrialization process in the
country.
The following is the achievement obtained
in
2003 and the comparison with the year 2002
In 2003 the National Library signed 03
projects with foreign partners valued at 3,268,000 USD. These projects
are now under implementation.
A significant change in material treatment
is the application of IT to different activities. This is a very important
step in the period when the National Library is taking the electronic
programme in material management in order to meet the domestic and overseas
demand for information search, in due course integrate with regional and
global libraries.
