Overview on activities of the National Library of Vietnam in 2003

The year 2003 saw considerable progress made by the National Library of Vietnam. All norms have been on increase from 5% to 56% compared with the year 2002. Major tasks have been accomplished, namely collection has been developed, thousands of  records have been supplemented to the database, increasing the total records of the National Library database to 215,533; the Project on Library Automation has been successfully implemented; many Projects in collaboration with foreign partners have been carried out; models of Electronic Library and Digital Library have been in shape, making physical changes in National Library's activities. Scientific study activities have been promoted, process of material treatment has been refined. Quality of services and international exchange has been enhanced. With new changes, the National Library has put strong influence on the entire system of public libraries in terms of service development. Services vary from traditional to modern forms to meet the demands of readers. This explains as to why the number of readers has rapidly increased, breaking the record in the national library network (increased by 35.4% against the year 2002; the number of readers cards issued increased by 56.1%), making a considerable contribution to the modernization and industrialization process in the country.

The following is the achievement obtained in 2003 and the comparison with the year 2002
  • Acquisition:
  • Books: 16,429 titles, increased by 22.2%
    Newspapers and periodicals: 35, 676 issues, increased by 5.3%
  • Legal deposit:
  • Books: 11,897 titles, increased by 10.3%
    Dissertations: 887 items, increased by 17.3%
    Newspapers, periodicals: 32,125 issues, increased by 5.0%
  • Material treatment: 16,509 titles, increased by 30.5%
  • Database supplement: 32,809 records, increased by 10.5%
  • Preservation: 10,308 volumes were rebound, increased by 44.1%
  • Services:
  • Readers cards issue: 28,115 cards, increased by 56.1%
    Batches of readers: 399,995, increased by 35.4%
    Number of books rotated: 923,573, increased by 34.8%
  • Study and professional guidance: 
  • Ran 05 informatics refresher courses, 02 national conferences
  • External activities:
  • Delegations in: 40

    In 2003 the National Library signed 03 projects with foreign partners valued at 3,268,000 USD. These projects are now under implementation.
    A significant change in material treatment is the application of IT to different activities. This is a very important step  in the period when the National Library is taking the electronic programme in material management in order to meet the domestic and overseas demand for information search, in due course integrate with regional and global  libraries.
