The National Library of Malaysia had the pleasure of receiving Prof. Carlo Federici, an expert in the field of preservation and conservation from the Institute of Pathology of Books, Italy for a short study visit commencing 18 till 22 October 1999.

During that period Prof. Federici studied the preservation and conservation techniques of library materials practiced by the National Library of Malaysia with specialisation on books and manuscripts. He proposed non-invasive restoration as the best method to adopt in the preservation of library materials.

The National Library of Malaysia made full use of his presence by inviting him to present a talk entitled Preservation and Conservation of Books and Manuscripts in Italy - a general overview. Test case: The Italian Experience on Disaster Control and Management which was held on 22 October 1999. The talk was well received by experts in the field from the archives, museums and libraries. He stressed that it is impossible to avoid deterioration entirely, but the situation can be controlled through preventive actions so as to relent the speed of the deterioration process. He proposed active preservation actions and not to wait for problems to show themselves.

The visit has triggered further strategic cooperation between National Library of Malaysia and the Institute of Pathology of Books, Italy. Prof. Federici and staff of the institute will be conducting one week Workshop on Non-Invasive Restoration Technique in the National Library of Malaysia in November 2000.

Participants from related institutions will be invited to participate. This rare opportunity of having experts from the Institute of Pathology of Books, Italy to facilitate the workshop will ensure the preservation techniques adopted and practised by the National Library of Malaysia and the institutions concerned are in accordance with the international standards.
