Introduction:
His Majesty's Government of Nepal established the Nepal National Library
(NNL) in 1957 at the Central Secretariat at Singha Durbar, having bought
the personal library of His Majesty the King's Spiritual Preceptor, the
late Hem Raj Pandy. From the outset, the NNL had an impressive collection
- 43,000 books and periodicals, including those brought in as a result
of the amalgamation of the Central Secretariat Library. It is presently
housed in Harihar Bhawan, Patan, and its open to all for reading and reference.
Objectives:

Providing adequate central services, including the creation of the
National Union Catalogue, List of Serials and other reference tools. |

Collecting all published materials and documents within the country,
and organising and preserving those collections. |
 |

Providing library services to the general public. |
 |
|
Promoting literacy through a network of mobile libraries, and through
the publication of Nepali literature. |
 |
|
Assisting other public libraries in the country in providing efficient
services. |
 |
|
In accordance with the Nepal Copyrights Act 2022, the NNL also makes
arrangements for the protection of the copyright of intellectual properties
including books, periodicals, films, works of art etc. |
Collection:
At present the NNL has more than 75,000 books, documents and periodicals
in different languages including Nepali, English, Hindi, Sanskrit and others.

Users:
The Library users are the general public, government personnel, teachers,
students, researchers and children.
Databases:
The Library has implemented a Bibliographic Information System using
the CDS/ISIS software package developed by UNESCO. Twenty-one libraries
in Nepal have joined the National Union Catalogue Network. The first volume
of NUC was published in 1997.
Children's Library Unit:
A separate Children's Library Unit was established on the auspicious
occasion of the Nepal Children's Day on August 20, 1995. More than 1200
children's books in Nepali and in English have been acquired in different
subjects.
Re-organisation of the Library with UNESCO
Support:
In order to strengthen the library service system in Nepal, UNESCO,
with financial support from DANIDA, has been supporting the NNL in a five
year project, the "Re-organisation of the Nepal National Library in Support
of Literacy Programme" from December 1994 to December 1999. The project
has assisted the NNL in:

Setting up adequate central services; |

Developing a Mobile Library component to serve very remote and isolated
communities, in close association with the Basic and Primary Education
Project (BPEP); |
 |
|
Designating affiliated libraries in the Eastern, Western, Mid-Western
and Far-Western Development Regions with special emphasis on provision
for literacy and post literacy requirements; |
 |
|
Encouraging writers and publishers by subsidizing the writing and publishing
of Nepali literature, including books for children; |
 |
|
Developing a skilled workforce through training of library and information
personnel; |
 |
|
Reinforcing the services provided by the Resource Centres being established
under BPEP by providing recreational reading materials for children; and |
 |
|
Promoting the new image of the NNL and publicizing its role and improved
services. |
Mobile Library
To develop Mobile Library in the country NNL has launched mobile library
services in two places Aalapot and Tinthana in Kathmandu district since
July 29, 2000. The library is going to trace other places for the very
purpose in this district in near future.
Technical assistance from Japan
The Government of Japan has agreed to provide micrographic equipment
to Nepal National Library to enhance the preservation of the valuable materials
in its possession.
