In order to strengthen the library service system in Nepal, UNESCO, with financial support from DANIDA, has been supporting the NNL in a five year project, the "Re-organisation of the Nepal National Library in Support of Literacy Programme" from December 1994 to December 1999. The project has assisted the NNL in:
Setting up adequate central services;
Developing a Mobile Library component to serve very remote and isolated communities, in close association with the Basic and Primary Education Project (BPEP);
Designating affiliated libraries in the Eastern, Western, Mid-Western and Far-Western Development Regions with special emphasis on provision for literacy and post literacy requirements;
Encouraging writers and publishers by subsidizing the writing and publishing of Nepali literature, including books for children;
Developing a skilled workforce through training of library and information personnel;
Reinforcing the services provided by the Resource Centres being established under BPEP by providing recreational reading materials for children; and
Promoting the new image of the NNL and publicizing its role and improved services.
