The Platform Asia Collections
The Platform Asia Collections
(PAC) is a working group of representatives from Dutch libraries with Asian
Collections, which was set up through the co-ordination of the International
Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in 1996. The PAC provides the first
platform of its kind in the Netherlands. The aim of the Platform is to
improve service to the users of the libraries involved, by 1) improving
the overall co-ordination and co-operation amongst the various libraries
concerned; 2) improving the co-ordination of the participating libraries
with regard to their acquisition of Asian collections and by 3) improving
accessibility to the collections by making optimal use of oppor-tunities
presented by Information and Communi-cati-ons Technology (ICT) and the
World Wide Web (WWW).
Activities
Within the PAC framework,
consul-tation on the co-ordination of collections takes place on a regular
basis. The first fruits of this co-ordination were a workshop entitled
'Developments in the co-operation of Asian Collections' held in 1997, and
two databases: 1) an inventory of journals on Asian Studies available in
Dutch libraries (IPAC), which will be accessible via the Internet soon;
and 2) an inventory of Asian Collections of Dutch Libraries, entitled 'IIAS
Guide to Asian Collections in the Netherlands'. Besides this, individual
PAC members have initiated new databases.
