MEDICAL LIBRARY REHABILITATED

[---contents---next]

The Special Library Services Advisory Section staff had been officially requested to provide assistance to reorganise the Medical Library at the National Referral Hospital. The request was made by the Medical Superintendent Dr. A. Oritaimae.

Dr. Oritaimae said that it is important to reorganise the library since the University of Papua New Guinea approved that the National Referral Hospital be training sites for Post-Graduate training in Surgery and Paediatrics.

Assistance is sought from the National Library to assist the Medical Library to meet this requirement. Already a clerical staff was stationed in the library to mann the collection and carry out other library related duties.

The Medical Library is located within the old administration building at the eastern end of the new hospital. A new library room is included in the third phase of the hospital project which is yet to be completed.

The provision of a new computer to the library is of great assistance especially to store library records and other related information. A library database will be installed to replace the existing card system.

Meanwhile, work to reorganise the library collection has already started since 27th July 1999. It involves the arrangement of materials according to their subject numbers.
