SOLOMON ISLANDS COLLECTION (SIC) NEWS

Staff of the Solomon Islands Collection were pleased to have Major General Sitiveni Rabuka, Commonwealth Secretariat Special envoy to Solomon Islands visit the Collection on the 13th of July 1999. 

The visit to the National Library was to seek information on the revised laws of Solomon Islands: police act, as part of his assignment to draw up a recommendation to the government in finding a lasting solution to end the current ethnic crisis. 

The requested information was provided as related materials are available in the Solomon Islands Collection. 

The former Fiji Prime Minister was sent by the Commonwealth Secretariat as mediator in the tenth month old ethnic tension in the Country. 

The Assistant Secretary Library Services, Mr. Walter Huberts-Rhein, a former USP student also had chance to chat with him and told the General, that he was in Fiji during the 1987 coups. In reply the Major General said, "those were bad times".
