Xpressions @ the Courtyard

(News from the National Library Board, Singapore(3))

You think the library is only an information hub for inquisitive people?
Think again! The library is also a platform for poets, novelists, playwrights, singers, musicians, and other artistes to express themselves.
The modern library is both an information and cultural hub!

Our mission is to "expand the learning capacity of the nation so a to enhance national competitiveness and to promote a gracious society".

If you have visited the National Library of Singapore this year, you will have discovered that the modern library is no longer a mere physical repository of books. It is an information centre, with access to information in all media. However, the National Library Board of Singapore believes that the library should go even beyond that. After all, part of the mission is to promote a gracious society.

Besides being an information hub, the Board sees the library also as an oasis for cultural and artistic exchanges. Therefore the Board places much emphasis on our library programmes to bring art and culture to our people. In particular, when the Board reopened the National Library in January 1998, the Courtyard was opened to the public for this purpose. Cantonese opera artiste Ouyang Bingwen

It is in this Courtyard that the National Library organises regular cultural and artistic exchange programmes usually on Friday evenings for the public. So far, we have had readings of literary works, book launches, CD launches, live music, video shows, informative and educational talks, and forum discussions.
The open air, the renaissance fountain, the brick walls, and the cafe all contribute to a cozy atmosphere ideal for cultural activities. There is nothing like enjoying art or culture over a cup of good coffee, in the right company, at a prime time, and at the choice venue!

The National Library Board encourage people to appreciate the finer things in life, at the library.
