Priority Objectives for FY2011
The National Diet Library sets Priority Objectives every fiscal year to accomplish "Vision for the NDL’s 60th anniversary" under the framework of "Activity Performance Evaluation." Priority Objectives for FY2011 are as follows.
We set Evaluation Indicators for each Priority Objective to carry out valid evaluations. We will strive to improve these indicators

Vision 1: Enhance our legislative support function by improving services for the National Diet
- Priority Objective 1-(1): To strengthen the function as "Brains for the legislature" and "Comprehensive Information Center for Diet Members."
We will cooperate with researchers inside and outside the library, as well as carrying out objective and interdisciplinary research which are our library's characteristic. We will organize and provide legislative materials and information useful for deliberations of the Diet.

Priority Issue for FY2011: Enhancement of direct services such as policy seminars and consultation.
- Priority Objective 1-(2): To organize and provide legislative information useful for deliberations of the Diet as a "Comprehensive Information Center for Diet Members."
Vision 2: Make an exhaustive collection of results of intellectual activities in Japan to preserve them as common resources of the nation
- Priority Objective 2-(1): To publicize the legal deposit system in order to ensure acquisition of domestic publications
- Priority Objective 2-(2): To appropriately preserve collected materials and promote digitization in order to preserve them
For long-term preservation, we will improve circumstances and promote preservation measures such as repair and restoration. In FY2011, we will digitize books and periodicals published in Japan.
- Priority Objective 2-(3): To promote accumulating, preserving and providing digital information including Internet resources
We will promote the Web Archiving Project and steadily collect Internet information issued by national organizations and others in Japan as legally authorized from FY2010. We will proceed with consideration of a system to collect materials issued on the Internet in the private sector which are equivalent to books and serials.

Priority Issue for FY2011: Promoting legislation for collecting online publications
Vision 3: Provide prompt and precise access or links to information needed by users
- Priority Objective 3-(1): To streamline library work and improve convenience of our services and user satisfaction
We will review our workflow and library systems to achieve speedy access to materials and information. We will also try to improve and streamline our services to suit the digital information environment.
- Priority Objective 3-(2): To organize information resources inside and outside NDL to provide them effectively
We will start full operation of NDL Search in January 2012 as a unified searching service which navigates users to NDL's holdings as well as information resources held by NDL and other organizations. We will provide contents of various themes which are useful for reference via the RESEARCH NAVI. We will achieve a user-friendly and rapid provision of bibliographic information.

Priority Issue for FY2011: ·Full-scale operation of NDL Search and expansion and enforcement of the access

Vision 4: Seek to provide equally good service to all users regardless of where they are
- Priority Objective 4-(1): To promote provision of digitized materials via the Internet
We will steadily provide materials digitized intensively in FY2009-FY2010 via the Internet whose copyright is cleared . We will also provide table of contents information via the Internet of these materials.

Priority Issue for FY2011: Promoting provision of mass digitization materials
Vision 5: Offer a variety of appealing services to society and increase NDL's visibility
- Priority Objective 5: To gain more social recognition of NDL's roles and activities through events, exhibitions, and public activities held by the National Diet Library and others
We will promote public relations actively to inform about NDL's roles and activities. We will hold various lectures and events to support reading and cultural activities among the Japanese people. We will make rich special exhibitions and electronic exhibitions which widely introduce the valuable collections of the NDL by subject.

Priority Issue for FY2011: Conducting public acitivities to enhance information provision via the Internet
Vision 6: Promote closer cooperation with libraries of various kinds in Japan including public libraries
- Priority Objective 6: To enhance coordination and cooperation with, and also support, various libraries in Japan
We will promote the NDL National Union Catalog Network System and the Collaborative Reference Database in cooperation with libraries across Japan. We will provide information on libraries and library science via the Current Awareness Portal. We will improve training programs for librarians nationwide. We will encourage children's reading activities in tandem with public libraries.

Priority Issue for FY2011: Promoting cooperation with libraries and related organizations such as supporting regional digital archiving
Vision 7: Try to share and exchange information by maintaining close relationships with overseas libraries
- Priority Objective 7: To deepen coordination and cooperation on digital archiving among libraries and other related organizations
We will deepen coordination and cooperation with overseas libraries and other organizations in the area of digital archiving. We will make progress in standardization of digital archiving in Asia in cooperation with national libraries in China and Korea.

Priority Issue for FY2011: Promoting China-Japan-Korea Digital Library Initiative (CJKDLI)
We will work on the follwing item as priority objective for FY2011.
- Priority Objective (Extra): To provide materials and information and to aid libraries' reconstruction in order to assist sufferers and rebuild the region affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake
