Protection of Personal Information

The National Diet Library (NDL) has established a policy targeting information systems to protect users' personal information and has committed itself to ensuring appropriate treatment of users' personal information.

“Personal Information” Definition

"Personal Information" as used in NDL's policy shall mean information about a living individual by which the specific individual can be identified by name, date of birth or other description contained in the information (including information that can be compared with other information and thereby identify the specific individual).

Obtaining and Retaining of Personal Information

NDL obtains and retains personal information to operate and improve services. When NDL retains personal information, NDL shall ensure the purpose of using the information and retain it to the extent necessary to accomplish the purpose.

Restrictions on Use and Provision of the Information

NDL shall not use the retained personal information for other purposes, neither shall it provide the information to a third party unless there is sufficient reason for providing the information

Management of Personal Information

NDL takes the appropriate measures to prevent unauthorized access to or leakage of the personal information.

Disposal of Personal Information

NDL shall dispose of or erase any retained personal information of which the purpose of use has been accomplished and of which the storage period has expired.

Disclosure, Correction and Cessation of Use

Any person can request that his or her retained personal information should be disclosed, corrected or deleted.
