This section summarizes news on international cooperation such as international conferences attended by NDL staff, and NDL's international exchange activities.

The 3rd International Preservation Conference was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Mr. Kosuke Murakami (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library) attended the conference and made a presentation titled "Digital Preservation and Its Research in the National Diet Library (NDL) ? focused on electronic materials" (Presentation file of Mr. Murakami PDF 419KB)

The 2nd Mutual Visit Program between the National Assembly Library (NAL), the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) of Korea and the NDL was held at Seoul. Mr. Ken'ichi Terakura (Director, Education, Culture, Science and Technology Division, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) and Mr. Natsuto Fujiwara (Researcher, Overseas Legislative Information Division, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) visited the NAL and NARS and gave presentations. Two-day symposium "Enhancing the Culture of Reading and Books in the Digital Age - Copyright as a means to foster creativity and access - " was held in association with the NDL, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the International Publishers Association (IPA), Japan Reprographic Rights Center (JRRC), Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance (JAACC), Japan Book Publishers Association (JBPA). The 29th Mutual Visit Program between the National Library of China (NLC) and the NDL was held in Beijing. Headed by Mr. Hirofumi Yamaguchi (Senior Specialist, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau), four delegates visited the NLC and gave presentations and exchanged questions and answers. International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications 2010 was held at Pittsburgh, U.S.A. Mr. Ryo Sato (Acquisitions Administration and Bibliographic Control Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) attended the meeting.

The 13th Mutual Visit Program between the National Library of Korea (NLK) and the NDL was held, and Ms. Hwang Myun (Director, Digital Library Service Division, National Digital Library of Korea), Ms. Cho Jae-hak (Director, Stack Management and Reading Services Department, National Library for Children & Young Adults), Mr. Jinho Park (Senior Researcher, National Digital Library of Korea), and Mr. Jang Bo-seong (National Library Support Center for the Disabled) of NLK visited Japan. 7th International Conference on Preservation of Digital Objects (iPRES2010) was held at Vienna, Austria. Mr. Masaki Shibata (Assistant Director, Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan) and Ms. Yoko Shibata (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan) attended the Conference. Mr. Shibata also attended International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) Working Group Meetings and 10th International Web Archiving Workshop (IWAW) and gave a presentation titled "NutchWAX Japanization" [PDF200KB] at IIPC.

The 32nd International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) World Congress 2010 was held at Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Ms. Maki Aoyama (Planning and Cooperation Division, International Library of Children's Literature) attended the congress.

Prof. Roger Chartier (Collège de France) was invited to the NDL as a speaker at the lecture meeting titled "History and future of books and reading." He also had discussion session with Prof. Norihiko Fukui (President of Gakushuin University) and Dr. Makoto Nagao, Librarian of the NDL. The 21st Conference of the European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists (EAJRS) was held in Genova, Italy. Ms. Makiko Tatematsu (Assistant Director, Administrative Division, Planning Department) participated in the meeting and gave a presentation titled "Digitization of collection and Web Archiving Project at the National Diet Library." 5th International Group of ex-Libris Users Conference was held at Gent, Belgium. Mr. Yasuhiro Fukubayashi (Information Systems Division, Administrative Department) attended the conference.

The World Library and Information Congress 2010, the 76th International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) General Conference and Assembly was held in Gothenburg, Sweden. The theme of this year was "Open access to knowledge - promoting sustainable progress." Seven NDL staff members participated in the conference, led by Dr. Makoto Nagao, Librarian.

National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Legislative Summit 2010 was held at Louisville, U.S.A. Mr. Shoichi Kotera (Director, Land Development and Communications Division, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) attended the conference.

Ms. Barbara Lison (Former President of BID, Director of the Bremen Public Library) was invited to the NDL to give a lecture "Libraries and Reading in Germany and Europe." She also had discussion session with Dr. Makoto Nagao, Librarian of the NDL. A brief report of the lecture and discussion is available in NDL Newsletter No.175.

International Conference on "Preservation and the Four Elements" was held in Beijing, China. Ms. Noriko Nakamura (Library Counsellor, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) and Ms. Satoko Muramoto (Preservation Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) attended the conference. World Digital Library Partners Meeting was held in Washington, USA. Mr. Hisayoshi Harada (Senior Librarian, Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library) attended the conference.

ISO/TC46 Plenary Meeting was held in Jeju Island, Korea. Ms. Naoko Harai (Library Counsellor, Administrative Department) and Mr. Masahiko Kawai (Acquisitions Administration and Bibliographic Control Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) attended the conference.

The IIPC General Assembly was held in Singapore. Mr. Masaki Shibata (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan) attended the assembly.

The 8th European Conference on Digital Archiving (ECA 2010) was held in Switzerland. Ms. Tomoko Okuda (Administrative Division, Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library) attended the conference.

The 18th Meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries in Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) was held in Singapore. Ms. Machiko Nakai (Director General, Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library) was among the 16 delegates from 10 countries to attend the conference.

Ms. Naomi Yabe Magnussen (Subject librarian for Japanese and East Asian studies, Library of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Oslo Library) was invited to the NDL to give a lecture "Japanese studies support by academic library in Norway and Nordic countries - exploring of Nordic and European library network." Ms. Patricia A. Steele (the Dean of the University of Maryland Libraries) was invited to the NDL to give a lecture "Academic Libraries: Getting to the Future in the Google World" at the Tokyo Main Library on March 9. Mr. Erland Kolding Nielsen (Director General of the Royal Library (Denmark)), and Dr. Jill Cousins (Executive Director of EDL Foundation / Program Director of the European Library) was invited to the NDL to attend the lecture meeting commemorating the launch of the roundtable on digital information resources in MLA collaboration: Connecting intellectual properties - Initiatives in Europe. They also had a panel discussion with Dr. Makoto Nagao, Librarian of the NDL and Prof. Naoki Takubo (Professor of the Faculty of Junior College Division, Kinki University) on "Significance of MLA collaboration."
