Dr. Willy F. Vande Walle, Professor Emeritus of Japanese Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven and Chairman of the European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists (EAJRS), visited the NDL. The 18th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL) was held in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Mr. Takanori KAWASHIMA (Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) and Ms. Kumiko SATO (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL) attended the conference.

Ms. Virginia Lladó-Buisán, Head of Conservation and Collection Care of the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, gave a lecture at the invitation of the NDL entitled “Conservation approaches to the digitization of collections at Bodleian Libraries: supporting and preserving” in the 27th Forum on Preservation at the Tokyo Main Library. The 6th meeting of the China-Japan-Korea Digital Library Initiative (CJKDLI) was held at the National Library of Korea. Mr. Kota OZAWA (Assistant Director, Digital Information Services Division, Digital Information Department), Ms. Akiko HASHIZUME (Digital Information Distribution Division, Digital Information Department), Mr. Daichi MACHIYA (Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) and Mr. Masahiro KINOSHITA (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL) attended the meeting. The 35th Mutual Visit Program between the National Library of China (NLC) and the NDL was held in Beijing. Headed by Mr. Mitsuaki AMINO (Deputy Librarian), a delegation of five NDL employees visited the NLC and gave three different presentations on three different subjects, each followed by a discussion session. Ms. Kristiina Hormia-Poutanen, President of the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) and Director of Library Network Services at the National Library of Finland, gave a lecture at the invitation of the NDL during an International Symposium entitled "Trends in Open Science and the Role of Libraries" at the Tokyo Main Library. Information on the symposium is available on the Events page of the NDL website.

An International Policy Seminar entitled Family Diversity—From European Experiences was held at the Tokyo Main Library. Prof. Dr. Martin Nettesheim (Faculty of Law, University of Tuebingen) was invited as a keynote speaker.

The Annual Directors' Meeting of ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) Centers was held in Brasilia, Brazil. Mr. Kentaro YANAGISAWA (Serials and Non-book Materials Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) participated in the meeting.

Mr. Yann Sordet, Director of the Bibliothèque Mazarine attached to the Institute of France, Ms. Emmanuelle Gondrand-Sordet, Director of the Bibliothèques de l'École normale supérieure, and Dr. Jean-Dominique Mellot, conservateur général, chef du service de l'Inventaire rétrospecif, direction des Collections, Bibliothèque nationale de France, visited the NDL.

H.E. Dr. Caroline Bouvier Kennedy, Ambassador of the United States of America, and her party visited the NDL.

The International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications 2016 was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ms. Saho YASUMATSU (Digital Information Distribution Division, Digital Information Department) attended the conference and made a presentation titled "Japanese Metadata Standards ‘National Diet Library Dublin Core Metadata Description (DC-NDL)’" (Presentation file: [PDF 1.3MB]).

The 19th Mutual Visit Program between the National Library of Korea (NLK) and the NDL was held, and Ms. KIM NamSuk (Director of the Digital Library Planning Division, Digital Library Department), Ms. HA BuYong (Serials & Government Publications Division, Library Services Department), and Ms. YOON HeeJeong (Acquisitions Division, Library Services Department) of the NLK visited Japan. The 13rd International Conference on Digital Preservation (iPRES2016) was held in Bern, Switzerland. Mr. Shuji KAMITSUNA (Senior Librarian, Kansai-kan of the NDL) attended the conference.

The 8th Plenary Meeting of Research Data Alliance (RDA) was held in Denver, Colorado, USA. Satoshi YAMAGUCHI (Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) attended the meeting.

The 27th Conference of the European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists (EAJRS) was held in Bucharest, Romania. Ms. Kae MORIMOTO (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL) attended the conference and made a presentation titled "How to make good use of the NDL Digital Collections for Japanese Studies" (Presentation file: [PDF: 1.2MB]). The 45th Annual International Conference of the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) was held in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Shigeru MATSUURA (Senior Librarian, International Library of Children(s Literature), Ms. Naoko NAKAJIMA (Planning and Cooperation Division, International Library of Children’s Literature), Ms. Azusa HIGASHIKAWA (Resources and Information Division, International Library of Children’s Literature), and Ms. Yuko NAGANO (Children’s Services Division, International Library of Children’s Literature) attended the conference.

The 35th International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) World Congress 2016 was held in Auckland, New Zealand. Ms. Makiko HONDA (Director, Children’s Services Division, International Library of Children’s Literature) attended the conference.

The World Library and Information Congress 2016, the 82nd International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) General Conference and Assembly was held in Columbus, Ohio, USA. The theme of this year was "Connections. Collaboration. Community." Seven NDL staff members participated in the conference, led by Mr. Hisanori TANAKA (Director General, Digital Information Department). Mr. Tanaka also participated in the annual meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) held on August 16, as the proxy of Dr. Sawako HANYU, Librarian of the NDL. Mr. Tanaka made a presentation titled "The National Diet Library’s initiatives on mass digitization and their impact on the digital publishing market in Japan" (Presentation file: [PDF1.4MB]) at the CDNL, Mr. Hiroyuki OKUYAMA (Director, Research Planning Division, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) made a presentation titled "Major initiatives to improve the quality and value of the research service: Current topics and challenges at the National Diet Library, Japan" (Presentation file: [PDF 76KB]) at the 32nd Pre-Conference of the Library and Research Services for Parliaments Section, and Mr. Kazuhiro ANDO (Library Cooperation Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL) made a presentation titled "Access to Digital Libraries for Persons with Print Disabilities in Japan" (Presentation file: [PDF 136KB]) at the Satellite Conference of the Libraries Serving Persons with Print Disabilities Section.

Mr. Nguyen Hanh Phuc, Secretary General of the National Assembly of Vietnam, and his party visited the NDL.

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit 2016was held in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Ms. Maiko SAITO (Agriculture, Forestry and Environment Division, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) attended the conference.

H.E. Ms. Anne Barrington, Ambassador of the Ireland, visited the NDL.

Mr. Roger Mello, an author and illustrator, was invited to the NDL to give a lecture "Books: a maze of difference" at the International Library of Children's Literature.

Ms. Elaine Westbrooks, Associate University Librarian for Research, University of Michigan Library, and Dr. Dawn Lawson, Head of the Asia Library of the University of Michigan, visited the NDL.

A seminar on construction of a new building of the National Assembly Library of Viet Nam was held in Hanoi, Viet Nam, as part of the Project for Capacity Development of the Office of the National Assembly. Mr. Yoshiyuki KANEMATSU (Senior Researcher, Interdisciplinary Research Service, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) and Mr. Kazuhiko MIYAMOTO (Assistant Director, Facilities Management Division, Administrative Department) participated in the seminar.

Japan–France Forum "Books in the digital era" (French title: Forum franco-japonais « Livre et numérique ») was held at the Tokyo Main Library, in cooperation with the French Embassy in Japan / Institut français du Japon. A keynote lecture "Books, yesterday and today" by Dr. Takeshi YORO, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, was followed by three sessions. The NDL invited Mr. Benoît TULEU, Director of the Legal deposit department, Services and Networks Direction, Bibliothèque nationale de France. Mr. Tuleu participated in the second session entitled "Digital books and the roles of libraries: commitment to long-term access and the legal deposit system." Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) was held in Singapore. Mr. Tadahiko MOTOYOSHI (Director General, International Library of Children's Literature) and Ms. Chihoko TANAKA (Children’s Services Division, International Library of Children’s Literature) attended the conference.

ISO/TC46 Plenary Meeting was held in Wellington, New Zealand. Mr. Toshihiro MATSUDA (Acquisitions Administration and Bibliographic Control Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) attended the meeting.

Ms. Asma Nasir, Projects Development in-charge of the Sharjah Center for Documentation & Research, Emirate of Sharjah, UAE and her party visited the NDL.

The International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) General Assembly was held at Reykjavík, Iceland. Mr. Satoshi OYAMA (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan) attended the assembly.

Bologna Children's Book Fair was held in Bologna, Italy. Ms. Ayuka NAKASHIMA (Resources and Information Division, International Library of Children's Literature) attended the event.

The annual meetings of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL), and the meeting of the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) were held in Seattle, USA. Mr. Katsuhito FURUYA (Assistant Director, Humanities, Maps, Rare Books and Old Materials Division, Reader Services and Collections Department), Mr. Takahiko NARIHARA (Modern Japanese Political Documents Division, Reader Services and Collections Department) and Mr. Satoshi MATSUI (Assistant Director, Public Services Division, Kansai-kan) attended the meetings. In the CEAL meeting, Mr. Furuya made a presentation titled Search and Digitalization of Maps at the National Diet Library" (Presentation file: [PDF 2MB]), and Mr. Matsui made a presentation titled An Overview of ILL/DD Services of the NDL (Presentation file: [PDF 620KB]).

Dr. LEE Eun Chul, Chief Librarian of the National Assembly Library, Republic of Korea, and his party visited the NDL.

The 24th Meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries in Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) was held in Wellington, New Zealand. Mr. Kaoru OMAGARI (Director General, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) and Ms. Shihoko YOKOTA (Branch Libraries and Cooperation Division, Administrative Department) were among the 26 delegates from 17 countries who attended the conference. Research Data Alliance 7th Plenary Meeting was held in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Shigehiro TAMURA (Business, Science and Technology Division, Reader Services and Collections Department) and Ms. Juri FUKUYAMA (Digital Information Distribution Division, Digital Information Department) attended the conference.

Ms. Emily Gravett, an author and illustrator, was invited to the NDL to give a lecture "Emily Gravett - Living in Pictures" at the International Library of Children's Literature.

An International Policy Seminar titled "The functions of parliament in the global era -- suggestions for Japanese politics from the EU experiences" was held at the Tokyo Main Library. Prof. Dr. Jean-Eric Gicquel (University of Rennes 1), a specialist in constitution and parliamentary law, was invited as the keynote speaker.

Mr. Yadab Chandra Niraula, Chief Librarian of the Nepal National Library, and Mr. Yam Bahadur Bashyal, Section Officer, Ministry of Education, were invited to the NDL to receive training and give a report on the post-earthquake situation in Nepal.

Dr. Dawn Lawson, Head of the Asia Library of the University of Michigan visited the NDL.
