Dr. Willy F. Vande Walle, Professor Emeritus of Japanese Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven and Chairman of the European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists (EAJRS), visited the NDL. The 18th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL) was held in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Mr. Takanori KAWASHIMA (Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) and Ms. Kumiko SATO (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL) attended the conference.

Ms. Virginia Lladó-Buisán, Head of Conservation and Collection Care of the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, gave a lecture at the invitation of the NDL entitled “Conservation approaches to the digitization of collections at Bodleian Libraries: supporting and preserving” in the 27th Forum on Preservation at the Tokyo Main Library. The 6th meeting of the China-Japan-Korea Digital Library Initiative (CJKDLI) was held at the National Library of Korea. Mr. Kota OZAWA (Assistant Director, Digital Information Services Division, Digital Information Department), Ms. Akiko HASHIZUME (Digital Information Distribution Division, Digital Information Department), Mr. Daichi MACHIYA (Digital Information Planning Division, Digital Information Department) and Mr. Masahiro KINOSHITA (Digital Library Division, Kansai-kan of the NDL) attended the meeting. November 28- December 4, 2016

The 35th Mutual Visit Program between the National Library of China (NLC) and the NDL was held in Beijing. Headed by Mr. Mitsuaki AMINO (Deputy Librarian), a delegation of five NDL employees visited the NLC and gave three different presentations on three different subjects, each followed by a discussion session. Ms. Kristiina Hormia-Poutanen, President of the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) and Director of Library Network Services at the National Library of Finland, gave a lecture at the invitation of the NDL during an International Symposium entitled "Trends in Open Science and the Role of Libraries" at the Tokyo Main Library. An International Policy Seminar entitled Family Diversity—From European Experiences was held at the Tokyo Main Library. Prof. Dr. Martin Nettesheim (Faculty of Law, University of Tuebingen) was invited as a keynote speaker.

The Annual Directors' Meeting of ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) Centers was held in Brasilia, Brazil. Mr. Kentaro YANAGISAWA (Serials and Non-book Materials Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department) participated in the meeting.

Mr. Yann Sordet, Director of the Bibliothèque Mazarine attached to the Institute of France, Ms. Emmanuelle Gondrand-Sordet, Director of the Bibliothèques de l'École normale supérieure, and Dr. Jean-Dominique Mellot, conservateur général, chef du service de l'Inventaire rétrospecif, direction des Collections, Bibliothèque nationale de France, visited the NDL.

The International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications 2016 was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 19th Mutual Visit Program between the National Library of Korea (NLK) and the NDL was held, and Ms. KIM NamSuk (Director of the Digital Library Planning Division, Digital Library Department), Ms. HA BuYong (Serials & Government Publications Division, Library Services Department), and Ms. YOON HeeJeong (Acquisitions Division, Library Services Department) of the NLK visited Japan. The World Library and Information Congress 2016, the 82nd International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) General Conference and Assembly was held in Columbus, Ohio, USA. The theme of this year was "Connections. Collaboration. Community." Seven NDL staff members participated in the conference, led by Mr. Hisanori TANAKA (Director General, Digital Information Department). Mr. Tanaka also participated in the annual meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) held on August 16, as the proxy of Dr. Sawako HANYU, Librarian of the NDL. A seminar on construction of a new building of the National Assembly Library of Viet Nam was held in Hanoi, Viet Nam, as part of the Project for Capacity Development of the Office of the National Assembly. Mr. Yoshiyuki KANEMATSU (Senior Researcher, Interdisciplinary Research Service, Research and Legislative Reference Bureau) and Mr. Kazuhiko MIYAMOTO (Assistant Director, Facilities Management Division, Administrative Department) participated in the seminar.

Japan–France Forum "Books in the digital era" (French title: Forum franco-japonais « Livre et numérique ») was held at the Tokyo Main Library, in cooperation with the French Embassy in Japan / Institut français du Japon. A keynote lecture "Books, yesterday and today" by Dr. Takeshi YORO, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, was followed by three sessions. The NDL invited Mr. Benoît TULEU, Director of the Legal deposit department, Services and Networks Direction, Bibliothèque nationale de France. Mr. Tuleu participated in the second session entitled "Digital books and the roles of libraries: commitment to long-term access and the legal deposit system."
